The two classic road climbs
The two reference climbs start from central Benasque. El Ampriu, on the Cerler road, gains height fast with tight hairpins and valley views. Llanos del Hospital follows the A-139 for about 13 km towards the head of the Ésera, with a steadier gradient and a high-mountain feel. Both are out-and-back from the village, with no car needed.
Gravel and valley tracks
For gravel, the valley floor and forest roads towards Estós, around Anciles or along the sunny side let you ride changing surfaces without traffic. Pyrenean gravel gets hard quickly: think in hours, water, weather and escape points rather than only kilometres.
MTB and the trail network
The area has grown for MTB thanks to its trail network and local cycling culture (the Puro Pirineo project). For technical lines, check the routes, respect walkers and livestock, and consider a guide if you do not know the terrain.
The Ésera path, for riding with children
The Benasque - Anciles - Eriste - Sahún link follows the Ésera on an easy route (Anciles is about 2 km, Eriste 3, Sahún 5-6). It is an ideal ride for families or a quiet day: stone villages, meadows and water, with an easy stop anywhere.
Rental, workshop and where to store the bike
Benasque has mountain shops with rental and a workshop for road and MTB. Confirm availability and opening hours before travelling, especially outside high season. If you bring your own bike, the apartment has a private parking space to keep it safe during your stay.
Before you ride
Check the mountain forecast (heat and afternoon storms in summer), carry basic spares and plan supplies: between the climbs and the valley tracks there are long stretches with no services. In spring and autumn, watch for leftover snow high up towards Llanos del Hospital.
